In this webinar, we hope to deepen our understanding of how nature functions and discover how our ability to work with environmental processes would help us to minimize natural disasters and their impacts. The presentation will discuss the possibility of adopting Nature-based approaches and traditional knowledge in Disaster Risk Management.
Speaker: Dr Ananda Mallawatantri
President of the Association of Disaster Risk Management Professionals (ADRiMP) and the Country Representative of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in Sri Lanka. He holds a BSc in Chemistry and a Diploma in Business Administration from the University of Colombo. In addition, he holds a Doctorate in Soil Physics, as well as a Masters in Environmental Science from the Washington State University, Pullman, WA, USA. He has over 30 years of experience in the Governments of Sri Lanka and the United States, United Nations, Private Sector, Industry, Research and University teaching. Before joining IUCN, he served as the Assistant Resident Representative for Environment Sustainability and Disaster Resilience at UNDP Sri Lanka, and as the Director for Energy and Environment at USAID for Sri Lanka and the Maldives.
The session will consist of a 40-minute presentation conducted by Dr Mallawatantri. After which a 50-minute session has been scheduled to allow for an in-depth discussion with regards to ‘Nature-based solutions for sustainability and resilience.
